A possible ecological disaster?
KCC Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport agreed to support Cllr Geoff Rowe (Lib Dem), Member for Malling Rural North East, in his request that some responsibility should be accepted for the repair of the collapsed river bank in Aylesford by Kent County Council.
This surprising statement, in response to a question raised by Geoff Rowe, as local Member for Aylesford, at today's County Council meeting, was welcomed.
Geoff had indicated in his question that a 400mm sewer in the location of the collapsed river bank was in danger of becoming damaged. Could this cause an ecological disaster if it were to be damaged?
KCC have agreed to contribute £2k towards the cost of repair, estimated at £70k and to assist Aylesford Parish Council in obtaining other help.
KCC have also accepted responsibility for the repair of the adjacent footpath, which is close to collapse.
Geoff says: "Sense and reason is beginning to prevail. It's ridiculous that a parish council should have to bear the cost of repairing any part of any bank of the River Medway - a major routeway for centuries through this part of Kent".
