Recycling rate of 42%, well done residents of Canterbury
In a debate on the Kent Waste Strategy at County Council on Thursday, 14 December, Martin Vye, Liberal Democrat, County Councillor, pointed out that Canterbury City Council had the best recycling rate in the County.
He told fellow County Councillors: "I am proud that the recycling arrangements in Canterbury, put in place by a Liberal Democrat / Labour administration, is achieving such excellent results. It was a courageous step going for fortnightly collection of plastic, paper, cardboard and tins - and bin collection of green waste - as it meant having a fortnightly collection of residual waste. There are problems for some people, and the system must be modified to help them where possible, but the result is a recycling rate of 42%, higher than any other Kent district, and much higher than the average. Well done residents of Canterbury.
He continued "There is a long way to go though. One of the biggest problems highlighted by people responding to the strategy is packaging by retail stores. KCC says it will 'encourage supermarkets to have bins for packaging to be discarded'. Fine - but if this does not work then we customers need to take direct action and simply discard the packaging we don't want before we leave the store. Maybe this will persuade stores to put pressure on suppliers to reduce dramatically this wasteful packaging."
