ROAD SAFETY IMPROVEMENT SCHEMES DELAYED INDEFINITELY

September 6, 2007 3:06 PM
20 mph zone

"mproved pedestrian safety for children and adults, may never be carried out!"

At the County Council meeting on Thursday 6 September County Councillor

Ian Chittenden, Member for Maidstone North East, asked the Cabinet Member for the Environment, Highways and Waste why the extension to the 20mph scheme in Hilary Road to include St. Paul's school under the 'Safer routes to school' scheme had been withdrawn?

Mr Ferrin responded saying that all outstanding schemes had been withdrawn and would be considered under the new priority rating process called PIPKIN which will set priorities based on agreed criteria in order to meet Kent's Local Transport Plan. He also advised that the Hilary Road Scheme is unlikely to be included in the programme for the next financial year (2008/09).

Ian said "The answer is very disappointing. There will be new projects coming on board each year. There is a recognised under funding of Highway works and a 20 year back log of works in Maidstone. Schemes such as Hilary Road will probably be re-considered year on year, so the improved pedestrian safety for children and adults, may never be carried out."

Details of the full question and answer are available on the ' County Council Questions' web page.
