Martin Vye, Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Canterbury, at todays County Council meeting (Thursday 6 September 2007) asked the Conservative administration to identify how many people in rural areas do not have access to Broadband.
He said afterwards I was told that "there are individual properties in many parishes where broadband is not available due to the condition of the local loop." "This is a totally unsatisfactory situation. I know many residents in the parish of Barham near Canterbury, for example, striving to run effective competitive 21st Century business from home - but are finding this difficult because broadband is not available.
"I want to see the County Council actively and urgently lobbying for full broadband coverage for Kent. I would have thought they would want to do that to ensure their pet scheme 'Kent TV' is available to everyone. Much more importantly, they should be doing it to promote and assist business enterprise especially in rural areas."
