County Councillor George Koowaree for Ashford East
(Ashford East covers the following wards:)
Contact George.
I've been nursing since coming to this country in 1957 from my birthplace in Mauritius. But it was retiring a few years ago that allowed me to commit myself to work for my community and I've been a County Councillor for Ashford South-East since 2004.
I've been Borough Councillor for North Willesborough since 1987 and in that time I've become a trustee of many of my home town's best known charities including the Almshouse Charity, Ashford Parochial Charities and I sit on Ashford Youth Advisory Board. But it is being part of the Ashford Old People Welfare Committee and attending the Learning Disability Partnership Group that I most enjoy as it informs my work as Lib Dem Spokesperson for Adult Social Services.

As a retired nursing professional I understand how important carers are to the most vulnerable in our society. I'm campaigning on their behalf for KCC to provide swift Carer's Assessments so they can get the professional and financial support they need quickly and the respite they deserve.

At over £1.6million a year, the East Kent Hospital Trust's earnings from its car parks make it the fifth highest earner of car park income in England. I'm campaigning for fairer car parking charges at William Harvey Hospital so that patients and visitors only pay for the time they use and visits to relatives and friends are free on Sundays.

I see thread bare roads such as Silver Hill Road, Osborne Road and Wootton Road all the time when I'm out in Ashford. I'm calling on KCC to identify pot holes and deal with them as soon as possible. I'm also pushing KCC to repair the massive number of streetlights left unrepaired for weeks on the streets of Ashford.
