Martin Vye attended the Social Liberal Forum annual meeting on Saturday, 16th July. It was a packed meeting. Martin Vye

The William Beveridge Annual Lecture was given by former Liberal Democrat cabinet member, Vince Cable. He gave a strong message about the need for government to invest directly in new projects as, though the financial system is awash with savings, business is not investing. He also talked about the need to explore alternative business institutions; he chairs a social enterprise providing community transport and is involved with a community bank.

Vince Cable mentioned talks with politicians from other parties. He referred to the fragmented centre-left throughout Europe, facing a unified right. However, he was not full of enthusiasm about the likelihood of an enduring partnership - Labour and the Lib Dems were going to continue tearing strips off each other in Liverpool and other northern cities.

Neal Lawson of Compass spoke well. He said he was a card-carrying member of the Labour Party, but 'carried it lightly' at the moment.

Martin Vye is county councillor for Canterbury City South West and Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Education and Children's Services at County Hall.
