"I've been nursing since coming to this country in 1957 from my birthplace in Mauritius. But it was retiring a few years ago that allowed me to commit myself to work for my community and I've been a County Councillor for Ashford South-East since 2004.

"I've been Borough Councillor for North Willesborough since 1987 and in that time I've become a trustee of many of my home town's best known charities including the Almshouse Charity, Ashford Parochial Charities and I sit on Ashford Youth Advisory Board.

"But it is being part of the Ashford Old People Welfare Committee and attending the Learning Disability Partnership Group that I most enjoy as it informs my work as Lib Dem Spokesperson for Adult Social Services."

At September's Kent County Council meeting Councillor George Koowaree, Member for Ashford East, asked the Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, Mr Brazier, to give his backing for funding to improve the access in and out of Barrey Junction on the A2070 now that Secretary of State for Transport has approved the construction of J10a on the M20.

  • Article: Sep 26, 2014

Now that the Secretary of State for Transport has given the go ahead for J10a of the M20 in Ashford will the Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport take a lead in influencing the Minister to increase the funding for improving Barrey Junction on the A2070 so that drivers can turn right and, for those who want to visit the commercial site coming from Junction 10, can do so safely?

In a question to the Cabinet member for Transport and Environment at the County Council meeting on Thursday, Lib Dem County Councillor George Koowaree raised his concerns at the length of the grass on the Drover Roundabout in Ashford.

George said: "The roundabout is the first impression for people coming into Ashford and its present state is an eyesore."

  • Article: May 17, 2014

Will the Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport give an explanation as to why the Drover roundabout in Ashford has been left to turn into a meadow, is it to make the cow sculptures feel at home?

Mr Chairman, it is a disgrace that first impression for people coming into Ashford is to see this eyesore.

  • Yalding Floods taken by Brian Clark
    Article: Feb 2, 2014

Liberal Democrats on Kent County Council are calling for action on a health hazard caused by the recent and ongoing flooding across Kent.

In a number of places groundwater has flooded the sewerage system, with very unpleasant results.

Rob Bird, county councillor for Maidstone Central, who lives in Yalding, says: " In recent weeks I have heard of several instances of sewage getting into properties, some of which might otherwise not have flooded, because the main drainage systems failed. Worse still, in Borough Green sewage was discharged from the local processing plant because of a catastrophic power failure.Flood water is nearly always dirty but the presence of raw sewage makes it particularly repugnant and hazardous."

Last week the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) named Ashford as the worst recycler in the country in 2012, the third year in a row that Ashford has been in this position. Only 14% of Ashford's waste was recycled in 2012 against a national average of 43%.

Local county councillor, George Koowaree, is appalled at Ashford's record but welcomes the opening of Kent County Council's new Household Waste Recycling Depot in Ashford last month.

"No Adult Social Care Saving yet by Transformation Consultants" was the message given to the Kent County Council Meeting on Thursday by Kent County Council Cabinet Member, Graham Gibbens.

Councillor George Koowaree asked what savings had been made to date since the highly controversial decision had been taken by the Conservative administration in April 2013 to appoint transformation and efficiency partner, Newton Europe at a costing of £5.4m.

Question by Mr G Koowaree to the Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services and Public Health

"Each month of delay 'costs' approximately £1.5m of savings not achieved in 2013/14" (para. 10 (1) p.12 report to Scrutiny Committee on 17 April 2013*).

Would the Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services and Public Health provide the County Council with specific details of the KCC / Newton Europe (our efficiency partner) transformation savings during the past 3 months and whether this equates to at least £4.5m (or £1.5m per month)?

Question by George Koowaree to David Brazier, Cabinet Member for Transport & Environment

Recently I witnessed a site employee at the temporary Ashford Household Waste Recycling facility getting into the metal recycling container to rearrange items to maximise the space for additional metal waste apparently because there was no crusher fitted.
